About Cottonwood

HISTORY

In 1849, Cottonwood was known as a stop over for supplies for supplies and a bite to eat before heading up the Oregon Trail. Cottonwood became a postal station in 1852, and in 1859 A Bavarian immigrant, Jacob Foster, purchased 240 acres on the north side of Cottonwood Creek where the town of Cottonwood now lies. Foster built a hotel on his land and soon Cottonwood became a home to weary travelers.

In 1872 Cottonwood became a major shipping point for cattle, lumber and other agricultural products from the fertile lands along the Sacramento River and Cottonwood Creek after Southern Pacific Railroad Company laid its rails north.

Over the years Cottonwood has contiued to grow with its economic base in agriculture and lumber products and today tourism.

GEOGRAPHY

Cottonwood is the southern gateway to Shasta County and the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland; at the crossroads of the Sacramento River, Cottonwood Creek and the Battle Creeks. Her broad, rich valleys are irrigated by gravity system waters and the outlying hill land is used as winter patter for some of the finest beef herds in the State.

From Cottonwood, one can look north to Mt. Shasta, east to Mt. Lassen-the only active volcano in the 48 adjacent states, west to the Coastal Range and south over the rolling range land of the upper Sacramento Valley.

Clean, smog-free days are the rule, not an occasion; and the seasons bring a pleasant change to the visual panorama that surrounds Cottonwood. An occasional snowfall in winter and the dry, hot summers provide the main ingrediants for a healthy living environment. Geographically located at the north end of the Sacramento Valley, we are within an hour of all the major recreational facilities in Northern California.

RECREATION

Cottonwood is fortunate to have many tourist and recreational benefits. There are seven public golf curses within 20 miles driving distance. Camping, mountain and rock climbing as well as gold panning are added bonuses for those who want to get back to nature.

Located just east of downtown is the Coleman Fish Hatchery, the largest hatchery of its type in the United States. The Sacramento River provides some of the northwest's best salmon, steelhead and trout fishing with resorts dotting the shoreline around Balls Ferry.

To the north is Shasta Lake and Whiskeytown Lake which provide excellent fishing, water skiing, houseboating and camping. Shasta Dam is a major engineering wonder and attrats many tourists each year.

Cottonwood uses its fine school facilities for recreational programs that benefit both recreational swimming, swimming lessons and safety courses. The community park has Little League fields, barbecue facilities and a brand new Community Center Building.

Cottonwood's Chamber of Commerce provides plenty of community events. The Annual Rodeo Week begins with "Ladies Night Out" - a fashion show/auction, the town barbecue and dance, the children's parade, the town parade and winds up with a two-day rodeo, street fairs and business fairs.

Plenty to do with your friends, family and neighbors!
